To celebrate our 4th anniversary, here’s a look back at some of our defining moments and milestones.
To celebrate our 4th anniversary, here’s a look back at some of our defining moments and milestones.
It started October 27, 2011 with stories from Troy Palmer, Little Fiction’s founding editor, and Kimberley Gillis, a Toronto-based writer and friend of Troy’s (imagine that). Submissions opened on the day the site launched and the first two stories sent our way were “The Exchange” by Shawn Syms and “Bright Outside” by Andrew F. Sullivan. Fast-forward to present day: Shawn and Andrew both have critically-acclaimed story collections out in the world and we’re feeling like some pretty proud parents.
2012 saw our first ever collections, Listerature Vol. 1 and Little (flash) Fiction. But we also published 28 individual stories in our first full calendar year, featuring work by Leesa Cross-Smith, Jay Hosking, Steve Karas, Will Johnson (x3), Jessica Kluthe, Emily Walker, Mensah Demary, and many, many more awesomely talented writers.
This is when Amanda Leduc approached with the genius idea of publishing nonfiction singles and the even more genius idea that she be the nonfiction editor. After months of trying to figure out a name and look for that side of things, Big Truths was born and with it, our first two nonfiction titles by Angela Palm and Liz Windhorst Harmer.
And, oh yeah, we kept publishing some pretty great fiction, too. Steve Karas, Andrew F. Sullivan, Leesa Cross-Smith, and Shawn Syms were all back for the ride, and joining them were an army of exciting writers including Amy Jones, Teri Vlassopoulos, Jules Archer, Susan Sanford Blades, Justin Lawrence Daugherty, Andrew Forbes, and (of course) many more.
Picking up where 2013 left off, we spent the year alternating months of publishing fiction and nonfiction. We published 30 titles in total, by authors from three different countries and, ah you know what, we re-capped the whole thing at the end of last year with a snazzy infographic. You can still check it out here.
Shout-out to all of the authors who helped make it a damn fine year for us. To name just a few: Jessica Hendry Nelson, Ayelet Tsabari, Steven LaFond, Julie Paul, Eliza Robertson, David Connerley Nahm, Paul Carlucci, Rebecca Rosenblum, Camille Griep, Wyl Villacres, and Nadine Sander-Green.
What can we say about 2015? It’s not over yet, but we won’t be publishing any new stories until next year. 2015 was crazy for us -- it was good, but it was also very different, and at times, difficult. We fell way behind with submissions and got out of rhythm with our publishing schedule (though still put out some amazing stories and essays from Trevor Corkum, Jared Yates Sexton, and Laura Citino, to name a few). But we had a pretty good reason for the distraction: we were trying to get some books crowdfunded (and actually succeeded -- Yay!) It all started with our NOMFICTION anthology (and an amazing partnership with the good folks at Inkshares) and now, we have three books that we’re putting together for release early next year.
To help us get back on track, the amazing Beth Gilstrap agreed to join us as our fiction editor (and we’re still smiling about it). Her first two stories were Claire Lombardo’s “I Only Want To Talk About The Nice Things” and Anna Crouch’s “Happy Year.” Do yourself a favor and read them if you haven’t already.
We have high hopes for 2016. We’re beyond excited to get our first ever books out into the world, and hopefully into your eager hands, and we’re looking forward to getting our pub schedule back on track. So far, we have stories lined up from Dave Housley, Schuler Benson, Jessica Kluthe, Kelsey Lauder, Lara Williams, Daniel Knowlton, and more. Stay tuned.
Thanks so much for reading and coming back.
