1. Dear Self growing up in Springfield, Mass.
My flesh is pinking in the sun. The sidewalks are broad flat boulevards of light. Crumbling buildings recall another place, another time. I am a stranger on vacation in my own city.

2. Dear Self, ages 25-38
You still do not have a child but there will be an August night when a midwife will tell you to put a pot of water on to boil. You will hold your sister's leg and watch your niece get pulled into this world amid blood and other fluids and take her first breath. She will open her mouth and know how to let her lungs speak for her. You will cry too.

3. Dear Self in second grade writing your first poem on your favorite place (the library)
You will do your first official poetry reading at 39.

4. Dear Self, age 33
You are not on your last trip to Ireland. You will walk the Prom from Salthill to Galway again, back and forth, every day for two weeks, committing it to your body's memory and writing poems into the soles of your feet.

5. Dear Self, approximately 10 years old
Garage station oil slicks still count as real rainbows. A dandelion is a real flower if you love it like one. You are beautiful no matter what the mirror tells you. Don't let anyone tell you different.

6. Dear Self, age 11, who receives a personal rejection letter from Highlights Magazine for your story about a girl who turned into her favorite food (jello) because it's all she would eat and who could only be saved by a mad scientist rubbing her with her least favorite food and drink (eggplant and lemonade)
Keep that letter and treasure it — you will learn how rare personal rejections are. And don't give up. You will be published. And asked to be a fiction editor (say yes).

7. Dear Self, age 21, who loses a beloved friend
You will still miss her. And many others.

8. Dear Self, age 18, who eats a 22-oz steak at that restaurant in that town in California where they filmed "The Birds" (you still have the T-shirt) and who can out-eat teenage boys without gaining a pound
I hate you. Just joking. But seriously, that won't last forever so enjoy it and your body at any and every size and shape.

9. Dear Self, age 1, who receives a teddy bear for your birthday
Hold onto him. He will travel to college and around the world with you and one day have his own radio show and Twitter account and followers (I can't explain Twitter now; you'll just have to wait and see), and because of him you will one day be asked to write a Top 10 list for a cool literary journal. If you have any good ideas for that, please travel to the future ASAP and let me know.

10. Dear Future Self, all ages
To quote a dear friend, Try to unsadden yourself. Things are looking up, whether you're looking back or forward.
